How to ...

Make a Nuno Scarf

  • Start here
  • Lay flat a strip of bubble wrap longer than the scarf.
  • Lay the silk scarf on top.
  • Arrange wool on top of the silk scarf.
  • Add strips of yarn.
  • Mohair will add interest.
  • This is the creative part.
  • Add some Angelina fiber for sparkel.
  • Spray the wool and scarf with soapy water.
  • and more soapy water
  • Place a second layer of bubble wrap on top.
  • The scarf and wool are between layers of bubble wrap.
  • Roll tightly around a plastic pipe and tie in place.
  • Keep your feet warm with hand-dyed hand-knit socks while rolling the scarf until it felts.

Save warp time weaving a shawl

  • Start here
  • Begin by creating a warp on the waping board.
  • The length and width of the shawl determine the number and length of warp threads.
  • A pattern of crossing warp threads is established to facilitate easier separation of threads while warping.
  • This cross eliminates many tangled threads.
  • Old warp threads are attached to new threads saving time.
  • Notice the warping board cross is being maintained in the left hand.
  • Knots must be gingerly pulled through the reed and headles.
  • Steady even pressure is applied as the warp is wound toward the back beam.
  • Leave enough warp to be tied at the breast beam.
  • Tie the warp threads to a lease stick at the breast beam.
  • Knots must be tied to maintain consistant tightness across the entire width.
  • Let the fun begin!
  • Load up the shuttle.
  • Push it throught the shed.
  • Adjust the warp threads to keep a straight selvage.
  • Beat the warp thread in place.
  • Add temporary packing to hold the last warp threads in place.
  • Cut the warp threads near the headles to save as much length as needed OR cut them in front of the reed to save time tying on your next warp.
  • Knot bunches of warp threads to create fringe on both ends of the shawl.
  • Including ribbons as warp threads makes the product more interesting.
  • Hand wash and spin dry.
  • Finished shawl...
  • ...so soft and stylish
